A new Discord server for Vectrex developers

News

We have opened a Discord server to bring together everyone interested in developing for the Vectrex ecosystem, whether on the original console or on the Vectrex Mini. The server is led and organized by Richard Stephens, who is already deeply involved in the software side of the Vectrex Mini, working on the user interface. Richard brings a lot of ideas to the table, always aiming to stay faithful to the spirit of the original system while still opening the door to useful and modern additions.

This Discord is meant to be a shared space where developers (or curious people) can talk, experiment, ask questions, and build together. The idea is to support creativity and help new games and tools emerge around the Vectrex, both classic and modern.

A space for sharing ideas and projects

We want to encourage exchange between creators, whether they are experienced developers or just getting started. It is also a place to showcase ongoing projects, get feedback, and find motivation to push ideas further. There is no need to arrive with something finished. Even early concepts, prototypes, or questions are welcome. The goal is to grow a friendly and active development scene around vector graphics and the Vectrex universe.

There are already a few Discord communities dedicated to Vectrex development, such as Vexterme, run by Brett Walach, the creator of Vectorlink. These servers have played an important role in keeping the scene active and sharing technical knowledge…

The Vectrex Mini server is meant to complement what already exists, with a focus on the new Vectrex Mini platform while also keeping space for broader discussions around Vectrex development.

Supporting modern development on Vectrex Mini

One of the main discussions on the server revolves around Vectrex Mini development. The Vectrex Mini is built around the ESP32-P4, a 400 MHz dual-core processor with 32 MB of PSRAM.

A complete emulation layer ensures compatibility with the original 6809 architecture, making it possible to run existing ROMs, homebrews, and indie projects without modification. Alongside this, developers can also explore ways to support development that goes beyond emulation.

Two complementary approaches are being explored. The first keeps development within the emulated environment, allowing familiar workflows while removing some of the original hardware constraints. The second introduces a native SDK for the ESP32, designed for vector-based games that take full advantage of the hardware while staying true to the Vectrex spirit. Both directions open up more ambitious possibilities, including richer graphics and expanded 3D experimentation.

Getting started with Vectrex development

For those who are new to Vectrex programming, we have dedicated space and resources to help you begin.

There are several ways to approach development. Some developers work directly in assembly for the 6809 processor, while others prefer C-based workflows. Tools like Vide, created by Malban, offer a full development environment including emulator, debugger, and even vector graphics tools. Another option is VectreC, a VS Code based setup created by Roger Boesch, which streamlines a modern C workflow for Vectrex development. There are also experimental tools such as Vectrex Studio, which allows coding in Python and compiling to 6809 through Rust, or more manual setups using CMOC for those who prefer full control over their toolchain.

The server also covers more advanced approaches for the original Vectrex such as PiTrex, an open-source hardware solution that connects a Raspberry Pi Zero to the Vectrex cartridge slot and enables more complex development by offloading processing while keeping real-time vector output.

This server is here to help navigate all these options and find the approach that suits them best.

Join the Vectrex developer community

This Discord server is meant to become a living space for anyone interested in building for Vectrex, whether classic or modern. If you are curious, experimenting, or already working on something, you are welcome to join the conversation.

It is also a place to showcase games, share wishlists, promote your own work, discuss overlays and music, or even buy and trade hardware. Technical channels cover C, 6809 assembly, 3D Blender workflows, PiTrex development, and Vectrex Mini specific topics. Everything is designed to connect creators and make collaboration easier.
