Originally released in arcades in 1980 by Stern Electronics, Berzerk built a reputation for its intense gameplay and unique AI-driven robot enemies. In 1982, it was adapted for Vectrex, offering a slightly different but equally fun and tense gaming experience.

- Genre: Maze Shooter
- Modes : Single Player

A Classic Arcade Game on Vectrex
One of Berzerk’s key features is its level system, where players navigate through a maze filled with hostile robots while controlling a lost humanoid character. The goal is simple : move through semi-randomly generated rooms, avoid or fight the robots that relentlessly try to eliminate you. Each room connects to multiple others, creating a dynamic sense of exploration.
Just like in the arcade version, Berzerk on Vectrex is famous for its iconic enemy : Evil Otto, a smiling, invincible sphere that chases the player, forcing constant movement.
Exploration and Survival
Your humanoid is armed with a laser gun, facing waves of patrolling robots that shoot as soon as they spot you. The gameplay revolves around key elements :
- Enemy robots : Each has a basic but deadly AI. They move in groups, blocking exits and forcing quick decisions. Their unpredictable behavior sometimes causes them to shoot each other, crash into walls, or self-destruct, giving free points to the player.
- Electrified walls : Touching a wall means instant death, just like for enemies who might accidentally run into them.
- Evil Otto : This immortal enemy prevents camping. If he catches you, you die immediately.
The game is a mix of fast reflexes and strategic decision-making. Staying too long in a room risks a fatal attack from Evil Otto, but rushing carelessly can lead to enemy fire or a deadly collision with a wall.
A Conversion with an Impactful Atmosphere
Unlike the arcade version, which featured digitized enemy voices, the Vectrex version compensates with sharp and unsettling sound effects, enhancing the game’s tension. Evil Otto’s bouncing noise is a dreaded warning… If you heard it, you were already in trouble!
Visually, Berzerk on Vectrex replaces raster graphics with vector-based visuals, creating clear, readable mazes. The robots have an octopus-like design but lack difficulty indicators due to Vectrex’s monochrome display. However, this doesn’t negatively impact gameplay adaptation.

Gameplay Adjustments
The game has no ending : the difficulty keeps increasing, making each session progressively more intense. Evil Otto enforces constant movement, keeping the game stressful and addictive. In the Vectrex version, he can no longer be hit by the player’s shots, making him even more merciless ! However, an extra life is awarded at 5,000 points (instead of 7,000 in arcades), making progression slightly easier.
This adaptation reduces overall difficulty, with less aggressive robots ; but the player can fire multiple projectiles at once, and robot/player shots no longer cancel each other out, modifying the game’s strategy, making it easier or harder depending on the player’s approach.
However, this port suffers from a few bugs, including a score display issue that replaces numbers with a car-like symbol and a simple dash.

Berzerk is a must-play title, embodying the essence of its genre, offering endless replayability and an experience that, even today, can keep players on edge and leave a lasting impression.
