A Unique Story in Video Game History

Cosmic Chasm holds a special place in gaming history : it was the first game to be ported from a home console to an arcade machine, rather than the other way around. In its arcade version developed by Cinematronics, the game gained speed, color, and cinematic sequences between levels. However, it’s on the Vectrex that players truly discover the strategic and minimalist essence of Cosmic Chasm.

Action, Anticipation, and Precision

The game begins with a map screen, revealing the entire underground maze. The player must choose a route toward the center. In each cavern encountered, the player faces :

  • A central core that expands constantly and becomes dangerous if touched.
  • Up to eight “Planet Protectors”, small diamond-shaped entities that charge at the player with precision. Their small size allows them to sometimes slip through your dual shots, making them trickier than they first appear.

Fortunately, the spaceship is equipped with firepower, capable of clearing most rooms quickly. And in case of emergency, a very brief temporary shield provides momentary protection.

Once a room is secured, the player must use a drill to break through an exit barrier. This original mechanic introduces a slower, more methodical phase. You’ll need to balance speed and caution to avoid losing a precious ship to a wall or lingering enemy.

An Explosive Finale

Once the central chamber is reached, the pace picks up :

  1. The player must plant a bomb at the heart of the system.
  2. Then they have 15 seconds to escape the maze before it explodes.

But the escape is no easy feat : there’s no clear indication of the entrance or exit on the map… It’s up to the player to remember the path and navigate under pressure. One wrong turn ? You lose a life. A successful escape ? A new mission begins, harder and even more intense.

What Stands Out

✅ Strengths:

  • A unique mix of action, exploration, and strategy
  • Map that brings planning
  • Dramatic tension buildup with the timed escape sequence

❌ Weaknesses:

  • Drilling through exits can feel a bit slow
  • Lack of exit markers after planting the bomb may be confusing
  • Some pacing inconsistencies

A Perilous Mission at the Heart of the Galaxy

Cosmic Chasm is far more than just another shoot ’em up… It’s a well-thought-out, high-stakes adventure with real strategic depth. It rewards methodical, precise, and daring players. And when that final countdown begins after planting the bomb… every second counts. It’s undoubtedly one of the most unique and intelligent games in the Vectrex catalog : a game that doesn’t just go boom, but makes you think before you shoot.
