Released in 1983, Heads Up is one of the few sports games available on the Vectrex, and the only one to offer a true soccer simulation. With horizontal scrolling and smooth controls, the game puts you in charge of a team in a fast-paced 1-on-1 match or against the AI.
Notably, in Europe, the game was released under the title Soccer Football and it was never released in Japan.

Heads Up
Developer : GCE (General Consumer Electronics)
Year : 1983
Genre : Sports / Soccer (Football)
Modes : Single Player / 1-2 players alternating

A Team Under Control
In Heads Up, you don’t control just a single player : you manage an entire team of three field players plus a goalkeeper, who you can also control (a rare detail for the time, even in more advanced sports games). Each player can pass, intercept, shoot, tackle, and bounce the ball to advance toward the opponent’s goal. The tackling system, while simple, lets you dash into an opponent to steal the ball, creating both funny and strategic moments.
You can switch the active player at any time, allowing you to always control the one closest to the ball. Being able to partially control the goalkeeper is a significant strategic advantage, often missing in other games of this type. It’s a detail that enhances the player’s involvement in both offensive and defensive phases of the game.
A Real Match Structure
Each match is played in two three-minute halves. If the score is tied at the end of regulation time, a sudden death overtime begins : the first team to score wins. Out-of-bounds plays are handled automatically : when the ball goes out, possession goes to the opposing team depending on who touched it last.
Solo or Multiplayer
The solo mode features decent AI that reacts and can give you a bit of a challenge. But it’s in simultaneous multiplayer that the game truly shines… exchanges become more unpredictable, duels more intense, and every play more nerve-wracking.

What Stands Out
✅ Strengths:
- Control over a full team, including the goalkeeper.
- Ability to switch active players at any time.
- Fun simultaneous two-player mode.
❌ Weaknesses:
- AI is decent but quickly becomes predictable.
- Doesn’t stay very engaging in solo mode over time.
A Soccer Match on Vectrex
Heads Up is a clever attempt to adapt a complex team sport into an accessible format, on a machine that prioritized lines over speed. Its strategic gameplay, multiplayer mode, and full team management make it a charming and enjoyable title.
