In the Vectrex library, Melody Master stands out as an educational title. Released exclusively in North America in 1983, it is one of only three official games to make use of the Light Pen. Melody Master is an interactive music workshop that combines learning, play and creation through the use of the Light Pen.

Two ways to train both ear and eye
In Game mode, the player meets the Songman, a small virtual pianist who puts their senses to the test. In Game 1, the goal is to visually recognize a note played by the Songman and find it on the keyboard displayed on screen. Each success lengthens the sequence, and a single mistake sends the player back to the beginning. The Songman indicates whether the chosen note is higher or lower than the target one, helping the player to progress.
Game 2 is more demanding as no note appears on the staff. Only the sound is played, and the player must find it from memory. It may seem easy at first but quickly becomes a challenge for the musical ear. While these games are quite simple, they can be helpful for anyone learning to read sheet music or recognize notes by ear.
A miniature composition studio
Music mode is the creative heart of Melody Master, turning the Vectrex into a small sequencer. Here, players can compose melodies, choose the tone (loud or soft), add a second harmony voice, integrate a rhythm section, adjust note duration or intensity, and more. There are many options to personalize the melody. It is even possible to insert rests to structure the composition, create looping musical patterns that repeat endlessly, and edit the creation by adding or removing notes.
For manual input, notes are placed on the staff with the Light Pen, while the controller is used to navigate between positions and menus. The result is a fairly complete interface that lets players refine their melodies from simple sketches to more elaborate compositions.
