Released in 1982 on the Vectrex, Rip-Off offers a unique defense-oriented experience. Protect your Resources at all Costs

In Rip-Off, you pilot a ship tasked with guarding fuel cells placed at the center of the screen. These cells are your only resource, and enemy ships aim to steal and escape with them. If all are taken, the game ends.

Armed with a laser and the ability to thrust forward, you must intercept waves of pirate ships exhibiting various behaviors. Each of the six enemy types has distinct characteristics… some are fast, others circle around before heading for the cells. Once you’ve faced all six types, they return in faster, more numerous waves.

What makes the concept so compelling is that enemies don’t attack you directly! No, they target what you protect. This forces you to anticipate paths, intercept at the right moment, and defend a fixed point without standing still.

Contact with an enemy or its shot doesn’t result in a typical death: as long as you have at least one fuel cell left, you keep playing. You can even destroy enemies by ramming them, at the cost of a short respawn delay. This clever mechanic turns self-destruction into a tactical weapon.

Deeper gameplay than it appears

One of Rip-Off’s lesser-known yet fascinating aspects is its vast array of 16 game variants. These settings affect:

  • The number of fuel cells to defend (4 or 8),
  • Enemy behavior,
  • Whether ships and shots can “wrap around”, exiting one side of the screen to reappear on the other.

This last feature significantly changes the experience: when shots can wrap around, they remain on-screen longer, reducing your firing rate (a subtle but dangerous limitation).

Solo or Co-op: two styles, same tension

Playable solo or with two players, Rip-Off truly shines in multiplayer. Unlike many games of the era that alternate turns, both players can play simultaneously. This duo approach enables real strategies, especially during the more aggressive waves. Players divide coverage angles and coordinate to intercept enemies more effectively, it’s a perfectly integrated cooperative mode.

In solo play, the challenge remains intense, particularly as enemies appear more rapidly after a few waves. The Bonus Round, unlocked after defeating all six enemy types, rewards persistent players with extra points, extending the action even further.

Precise controls, minimalist atmosphere

The ship responds with exceptional precision, and shooting is instant and fluid. The clarity of action (typical of the Vectrex’s vector graphics) lets you focus entirely on defending the base.

Some players may find the pacing a bit uneven, with lulls between waves. Others will appreciate the gradual tension buildup, offering time to reposition and breathe before the next assault.

What Stands Out

✅ Strengths :

  • Original, fast-paced defensive concept
  • Very fun co-op mode
  • 16 gameplay variants for strong replay value

❌ Weaknesses :

  • Sometimes uneven pacing between waves
  • No way to recover stolen fuel cells

A continuous defensive war

With Rip-Off, the Vectrex delivers a game that’s both minimalist and surprisingly deep in mechanics. Defend, intercept, sacrifice, cooperate… every match is a race against theft, and every moment of inattention can cost you your supply.

It’s a game that rewards vigilance, anticipation, and precision, with a real-time cooperative mode that makes it a standout title on the Vectrex.
