Released in 1982, Space Wars is one of the twelve launch titles for the Vectrex. This space combat game follows a rather classic concept: two ships face off in space with the goal of destroying each other, over and over. Inspired by the iconic game developed on the PDP-1 computer at MIT in the 60s, Space Wars made its way to arcades in 1977 before landing on the Vectrex.

Space Wars
Developer : GCE (General Consumer Electronics)
Year: 1982
Genre: Space combat
Modes: Single-player, 2-player duel

An orbital duel
In Space Wars, the player pilots a spacecraft in a confined area that includes only the sun, a few occasional asteroids, and the opponent. Both ships are strictly identical in terms of speed, firepower, and maneuverability.
The sun sits at the center of the screen and exerts a constant gravitational pull. This force quickly becomes a key element of the gameplay, as poorly controlled movement can send a ship plunging into it, leading to instant destruction.
Precise and responsive controls
Each ship can:
- Accelerate in the direction it’s facing using the “thrust” button.
- Fire lasers, which have a fast but limited firing rate.
- Use a hyperspace function to disappear and reappear randomly on the screen, a risky move often used as a last resort.
Flying the ship requires finesse, as momentum plays a big role. Once the ship is in motion, it keeps drifting, so you have to anticipate enemy paths while staying in control of your own.

A game designed for duels
While solo play against the AI is possible (and the AI is fairly accurate), Space Wars is most fun with two players. The matches quickly become intense, often leading to bursts of laughter or cries of frustration after a crash or a badly timed hyperspace jump. The game ends when one player reaches 10 points. Each destruction is marked by a short musical jingle, a small but unique touch in the Vectrex version.
Seven variants to tweak the challenge
Space Wars includes seven gameplay variants. These adjust several parameters such as ship speed, laser rate, or the intensity of solar gravity. Some settings offer a smooth experience, while others can become genuinely extreme. At higher levels, the ships are nearly uncontrollable, and gravity can pull you in with barely any resistance.
What Stands Out
✅ Strengths :
- Well-integrated central gravity in gameplay.
- Solid, strategic, and fun two-player mode.
- Plenty of game variants to adjust the pace.
❌ Weaknesses :
- Solo mode lacks long-term appeal.
- Frustrating shot accuracy at times.
- Extreme settings are hard to play.
Old-school space combat
Space Wars delivers a raw and straightforward experience, where each match depends on skill and the ability to predict your opponent. On the Vectrex, it keeps the essence of what made it strong in arcades: balanced mechanics and a real feeling of space piloting. A perfect game for playing with a friend.
