Spike is a platformer game released on the Vectrex in 1983, known for its unique gameplay and cartoonish atmosphere. Unlike most games on the console, Spike introduced digitized voices and smooth animation, making it one of the standout titles in the Vectrex catalog.

Spike
Developer : General Consumer Electronics (GCE)
Year : 1983
Genre : Platformer
Modes : Single Player

An Original Platformer Gameplay
In Spike, the player controls a small hero who must rescue his beloved, Molly, who has been kidnapped by his arch-nemesis, Spud. To find her, Spike starts at the bottom of the screen and must climb platforms to reach the top. To do this, he must place and climb ladders, jump on moving platforms, and avoid various enemies.
The gameplay is based on movement in a simulated 3D environment, allowing the player to interact with the elements of the scenery while moving horizontally and vertically.
The game consists of several levels. Spike must retrieve a key before reaching Molly’s cage. Unfortunately, once saved, she is captured again, increasing the difficulty with each new level. To defend himself, Spike can kick enemies, adding a strategic dimension to the game.
Increasingly Dangerous Enemies and Obstacles
As the levels progress, the difficulty rises with the introduction of new dangers, forcing Spike to adapt his strategy to progress.
- Level 1 : No enemies, only ladders to place strategically to reach the key and free Molly.
- Level 2 : The appearance of bouncing enemies that jump from platform to platform. Spike can either dodge them or knock them away with a kick.
- Level 3 and beyond : Introduction of bird enemies, adding an aerial threat. The platforms change size and direction each time Spike hits an enemy, complicating movement.
Spike loses a life if he falls into the void between platforms or if a moving platform pushes him off-screen. He also loses a life if he comes into contact with an enemy. The game ends when all lives are lost.

An Immersive Experience
What sets Spike apart from other Vectrex games is its innovative use of digitized voices. At the time, the Vectrex’s audio capabilities were limited, and the integration of digitized voices in a game from that era was a true technical achievement.
When Molly is captured, you can clearly hear “Eek… help… Spike” and when she is rescued, she exclaims, “Oh, Spike” . On his side, Spike yells “Oh no! Molly!” when she is kidnapped and “Darnit!” when he loses a life.
These voices not only add humor but also enhance immersion by giving the characters an extra layer of personality, making the game feel more alive and engaging. The contrast between Molly and Spike’s lines gives the game a distinct character and a unique identity, marking a notable technological advancement for the time.
