Exploring Vectrex Game: Spinball

Released in 1983, Spinball is a pinball simulation for the Vectrex, also known as Flipper Pinball in Europe. From the moment the game launches, a zoom animation immerses the player in a classic pinball experience, with a static table and a set of bumpers, targets, and score multipliers.

Year:

Genre:
Pinball / Arcade
Modes: Single-player, 1 to 2 players alternating

A  Single Table, a Constant Challenge

Spinball puts the player in front of a fixed pinball table with five balls to score as many points as possible. There’s no level progression or transitions, everything takes place on a single pinball table. The player controls two pairs of flippers using two buttons on the Vectrex controller. And just like a real machine, the table can be “nudged” using the joystick to influence the ball’s trajectory and try to save it… but overusing this function risks triggering a tilt penalty and losing the current ball. The button layout may feel unintuitive for some, which can affect responsiveness, but despite this, the game retains the simplicity of classic pinball.

Multipliers and Bonuses

What sets Spinball apart from a simple visual simulation are its numerous scoring and bonus mechanics:

  • Score Multiplier (1x to 6x): Activated by hitting all the bumpers or by touching the Ball Splitter (a rare star-shaped object beneath the center of the table that creates a second ball in play).
  • Center Diamonds: Located at the top of the playfield, they light up in sequence. Passing through them at the right moment earns between 500 and 1500 points.
  • Drop Targets: Must be hit in the correct order to activate a special bonus, including multiball mode via the Ball Splitter.
  • Spinners and Bonus Arrows: When active, they grant a huge 2000 point score, compared to just 300 normally.
  • Ball Saver: Occasionally activated at the bottom of the playfield, it can automatically return the ball into play if it passes over it, a temporary safety net, though not always reliable.

Surprising Technical Choices

One of the game’s most notable quirks is that the score isn’t displayed during gameplay. It only appears after losing a ball. This unusual choice removes any real-time feedback on your progress, which can feel a bit imprecise.

The ball physics are also quite unique, it accelerates and changes direction erratically, bouncing off nearly every line as if it were a bumper. This results in unpredictable trajectories, giving the game a very dynamic (and sometimes chaotic) feel.

It’s also worth noting that you can pause the game! An uncommon but welcome feature on the Vectrex. It allows you to resume even during active gameplay. However, if you stay inactive too long on the title screen, instead of starting a game automatically like many Vectrex titles, Spinball simply returns to the Game Over screen…

What Stands Out

✅ Strengths :

  • Multipliers, multiball, and targets: a true pinball on the Vectrex.
  • Rare and useful pause function.
  • Joystick nudge function to shake the table.

❌ Weaknesses :

  • Poorly mapped, unintuitive controls.
  • No real-time score display.
  • Unpredictable, hard-to-control ball physics.

A Static Table, But Lasting Appeal

Spinball isn’t without charm: it captures the spirit of pinball as faithfully as possible on the Vectrex. Visually, it delivers a clean vector-based pinball table with clearly distinguished elements and well-crafted sound effects. Spinball may appeal to fans of the genre and deliver the simple joy of hitting the right bonus at the right time. As with any pinball game, a match can last a while, even without much skill.
