Web Wars (also known as Web Warp in the U.S.) is a fast-paced rail shooter that immerses players in a surreal, digital world. Unlike traditional shooters of the time, Web Wars stands out with its unique perspective, blending arcade action with a collection-based gameplay mechanic. Players take control of a futuristic craft navigating a wireframe web, chasing and capturing various surreal creatures while avoiding threats. The game is considered a spiritual successor to Tempest (1980), incorporating a similar 3D-web-based movement style.

A Hunt Across the Web
In Web Wars, the player pilots a creature known as the “Hawk King,” an interesting-looking entity equipped with a “capture rod” used to snag fantasy creatures that appear throughout the game.
- Capturing Creatures : The game features 20 different insect-like fantasy creatures that fly toward the player at high speeds. Players must use the Hawk King’s capture rod to snag these creatures, which are then displayed in the Trophy Room at the bottom of the screen as an animated representation of the captured prey.
- Avoiding the Cosmic Dragon : If the player fails to capture a creature, the Cosmic Dragon appears and begins firing fireballs, adding an extra layer of challenge.
- Defending Against Drones : Deadly Drones, which act as guardians of the web, move up and down along the sides of the corridor. The player must use the Hawk King’s blaster to eliminate them while continuing to capture creatures.
- Increasing Intensity : After capturing around seven creatures, the game’s speed increases dramatically, requiring lightning-fast reflexes to continue progressing.
Increasing Challenge and Strategy
The difficulty in Web Wars gradually ramps up as the game progresses, requiring quick reflexes and strategic maneuvering.
- Early Levels : The creatures move predictably, and the Sentinel (or Cosmic Dragon) is slower, allowing players to get accustomed to the game mechanics.
- Mid to Late Levels : The Cosmic Dragon appears more frequently, enemies shoot more projectiles, and creatures move unpredictably, making them harder to capture.
- Losing a Life : Players must be careful; losing all lives results in game over, resetting the creature collection.

Immersive Audio-Visual Design
Like most Vectrex titles, Web Wars utilizes vector-based graphics, creating a unique aesthetic with clean, glowing wireframe visuals. The tunnel-like environment, combined with the illusion of depth, enhances immersion. The game’s audio, while limited to the Vectrex’s capabilities, features distinct sound effects for capturing creatures, enemy attacks, and the ever-looming presence of the Cosmic Dragon.
What Stands Out
✅ Strengths :
- Unique collection-based shooter gameplay.
- A dynamic sense of movement and depth.
- Increasing difficulty keeps the challenge engaging.
❌ Weaknesses:
- The Cosmic Dragon’s speed increase makes survival very difficult at later levels.
- Lack of variation in the background design.
A Unique Shooter in the Vectrex Library
Web Wars offers an unusual yet engaging shooter experience that stands out in the Vectrex catalog. With its combination of fast-paced action, strategic collection mechanics, and immersive visuals, it remains a fascinating title for retro gaming enthusiasts. The blend of arcade thrills with a unique hunting mechanic makes Web Wars a memorable entry in the Vectrex library and a must-try for fans of the console. Due to its late release in the Vectrex’s commercial life, the game benefits from refined graphics and gameplay mechanics, making it one of the more polished titles for the system.
