All Vectrex enthusiasts know MineStorm, the mine-shooting game built into the console. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the talented programmer and 3D modeler Milan Pollé took on an extraordinary challenge : creating a holographic version of Mine Storm.
Interestingly, MineStorm had already been adapted into 3D for the Vectrex console’s 3D Imager headset back in the day. This accessory was incredibly rare, with only a handful of compatible games in its catalog. Building on this legacy, Milan had the idea of taking things further with modern holographic technology.
Holographic Innovation
Milan used a holographic display developed by Looking Glass Factory. This innovative 3D screen works without requiring special glasses and comes in a vertical format : the same aspect ratio as the original Vectrex screen. By recreating the original gameplay with the addition of holographic depth, MineStorm 4D looks like the classic 1982 game but with an astonishing sense of depth.
Retaining the same gameplay as the original, this version, dubbed MineStorm 4D by its programmer, closely resembles the 1982 classic, but with the added depth provided by Looking Glass Factory’s holographic display. Milan also had the brilliant idea of introducing color to various game objects. Depending on the level, the mines are yellow, pink, or blue. This subtle addition brings even more life to the game without compromising its retro aesthetic.

A Timeless Experience with a Modern Twist
This 4D version captures the same joy as the original game while adding a modern twist and an innovative touch that gives it a truly contemporary feel. The timeless vector graphics ensure it remains as appealing as ever!
Be sure to watch the video of MineStorm 4D : it’ll likely inspire you to create your own holographic Vectrex prototype. Milan Pollé has generously shared all the development resources for this game, making them freely available to everyone. A big thanks and congratulations to Milan Pollé for this remarkable achievement!
