The Vectrex continues to evolve thanks to enthusiasts pushing its limits. One of the most innovative projects in modernizing the console is the PiTrex : an interface that harnesses the power of a Raspberry Pi to run games and emulators directly on the original Vectrex hardware.
What is PiTrex ?
PiTrex is an interface board designed to connect to the Vectrex motherboard via the cartridge port. It replaces the console’s original processor with the computing power of a Raspberry Pi Zero, featuring a 1GHz ARM CPU and 512MB of RAM. Unlike standard emulation on a screen, PiTrex retains the original vector display, ensuring an authentic experience true to the games of the past.
It allows Vectrex ROMs to be loaded directly from the Raspberry Pi’s MicroSD card, similar to a multi-cart solution. Additionally, a modified firmware of the well-known VecX emulator optimizes game emulation and enhances performance.

Features and Benefits
PiTrex offers numerous advantages for Vectrex enthusiasts and homebrew developers :
- Play original Vectrex games : In native mode, it runs Vectrex games without altering their functionality, ensuring full compatibility with the existing library.
- Advanced emulation : Thanks to the power of the Raspberry Pi, it can emulate vector arcade games like Asteroids, Tempest, and Star Wars with impressive accuracy.
- Hybrid modes : It allows users to switch between the original Vectrex hardware and PiTrex emulation, offering greater flexibility.
- Support for modern controllers : By connecting USB or Bluetooth controllers via the Raspberry Pi, players can enhance their gaming experience without modifying the original hardware.
- Homebrew development support : The Raspberry Pi-based environment is more powerful and accessible than native Vectrex development, allowing for easier game creation. It even supports GS BASIC from the Vectrex 32 project, opening new possibilities for developers.
- Game saves and “speedy” mode : Some games and emulators now support save functionality, while a performance boost mode improves the speed of emulated games.
Affordable Access to the Entire Vectrex Library
One of PiTrex’s biggest advantages is its ability to grant access to the entire Vectrex game library at a lower cost. Instead of purchasing original Vectrex cartridges, which have become rare and expensive in the collector’s market, players can load all Vectrex ROMs directly onto the Raspberry Pi’s MicroSD card.
This solution is not only more affordable, but it also preserves original cartridges while allowing full access to the console’s entire catalog.
Caution : Don’t confuse the PiTrex with a MultiCart. The PiTrex uses a Raspberry Pi to run software and emulators directly on the Vectrex hardware, whereas the MultiCart is simply a cartridge containing a selection of ROMs.
A Revolution for the Homebrew Scene
PiTrex represents a major breakthrough for the homebrew community. By leveraging the power of the Raspberry Pi, developers can create smoother and more complex games while still utilizing the unique vector graphics of the Vectrex.
Some developers have already ported open-source games like ZBlast and MAME-compatible (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) emulators.

A Constantly Evolving Project
PiTrex is an open-source project under active development. Regular updates improve compatibility and introduce new features. A dynamic community is continuously contributing to software improvements and the creation of new games using this technology.
PiTrex is available as a custom Vectrex cartridge or as a DIY kit. Users can also 3D print a case using files available on Thingiverse.
