Understanding the Vector Display of the Vectrex

The Vectrex is an iconic console that stands out due to its unique vector display, unlike contemporary consoles that use raster scanning on traditional CRT screens. Its operation is more akin to that of oscilloscopes from the same era, offering a precise and distinctive graphical rendering. But how does this technology work ?

What is a Vector Display ?

Unlike conventional screens that display an image by scanning a grid of pixels line by line, a vector display directly directs the electron beam to draw lines between defined points. This method ensures exceptional sharpness, free from aliasing effects (which are common in low-resolution displays).

On the Vectrex, this vector display is monochrome and enhanced by colored plastic overlays, adding an extra aesthetic dimension.

The key element of this system lies in a dedicated graphics controller : the analog graphics processor.

Main Components : Motorola 6809 and the Vector Generator

At the heart of the console is a Motorola 6809 processor running at 1.5 MHz. However, it does not generate the vectors directly. This task is handled by an analog vector generator, which converts digital instructions into signals that control the electron beam.

The Vectrex uses a Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), which translates binary data into voltages applied to the screen’s deflection coils, thereby influencing the beam’s position. The beam control relies on three essential parameters:

  • Position (X, Y) : Defined by the analog values sent to the deflection circuits.
  • Intensity : Determines whether a line appears brighter, dimmer, or even invisible.
  • Display duration : The longer a line is displayed, the brighter it appears, sometimes causing a “blooming” effect.

How Do Games Generate Vector Graphics ?

Vectrex games rely on coordinate lists and instructions stored as tables. This data is then sent to the vector generator, which draws the lines one by one using the “point-to-point” method.

This concept becomes very easy to understand when using the Vectrex Light Pen, especially in the “Connect” mode of the game Art Master. In this mode, you place points on the screen, and the Vectrex automatically draws straight lines between them, just like how vector graphics work! It’s like playing “connect the dots,” but in real time on a screen.

To optimize rendering and prevent slowdowns, unnecessary beam movements are minimized. Animation is achieved by dynamically modifying vector coordinates, providing remarkable smoothness for its time. A prime example is Minestorm, the built-in game, which perfectly showcases the system’s precision.

Constraints and Limitations

While vector technology offers ultra-precise graphics, it also has some constraints:

  • Limited number of vectors : The more complex an image, the slower the refresh rate, sometimes causing flickering.
  • No surface filling : Unlike raster displays, a vector screen cannot “fill” a shape, resulting in primarily wireframe graphics.
  • Calibration required : Analog components can drift over time, requiring periodic adjustments.

A Timeless Appeal

Even today, the Vectrex retains a unique charm thanks to its crisp graphics and retro-futuristic aesthetic. Its distinctive technology continues to inspire enthusiasts and homebrew developers who constantly push its hardware to new limits. More than just a retro console, the Vectrex remains a masterpiece of engineering and a symbol of video game creativity.
