Vectrex Academy is an initiative by Pforzheim University, offering students the opportunity to develop programming skills by creating games for the Vectrex console. This educational experience combines nostalgia with in-depth technical learning.
Courses Like No Other
Launched in 2016 under the direction of Professor Peer Johannsen, Vectrex Academy aims to teach programming creatively using the Vectrex system. The project was born out of necessity : the programming course initially required robots that were difficult to maintain. To solve this issue, Professor Johannsen dusted off an old Vectrex console and created a development environment in Motorola 6809 assembly or C. And thus, Vectrex Academy was born !

An Original and Stimulating Learning Experience
The Vectrex Academy program trains students in low-level programming, combining advanced C and MC 6809 assembly. They learn to optimize memory, translate C code into assembly, and use game development techniques adapted to the limited resources of the Vectrex system. The training also emphasizes vector graphic design.
Thanks to this demanding approach, students develop their creativity, refine their problem-solving abilities, and acquire valuable skills for programming on hardware with restricted performance.
The Games Developed
Throughout their training, students design original games for the Vectrex, exploring various genres : from fast-paced racing games to captivating space explorations.
Each project showcases their ingenuity and ability to overcome the technical constraints of this retro console.
After five months of intensive learning, students produce fully developed projects, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness. Their creations include complete features : score systems, precise controls, and strategically programmed opponents. Some even go further, adding overlays and detailed manuals, enhancing the user experience.

Game Sharing and Accessibility
The games created at Vectrex Academy are archived and shared with the community, serving as a valuable resource for retro gaming enthusiasts and aspiring developers. These archives allow players to discover and download the students’ games, accompanied by descriptions and screenshots. This not only showcases the students’ progress but also contributes to video game history preservation.
A Well-Deserved Success
Almost every year, Vectrex Academy offers a new cohort of students the opportunity to create unique games. A dedicated forum allows people to share progress, exchange tips, and engage with professors and gaming enthusiasts.
